Abstract

Our session proposes to approach the question of the circular economy, in the sense of a transformative circular society (Friant et al., 2020) from the perspective of post-growth, and to study its acceptability, obstacles, and ways forward. How does the circular economy conceived by K. E. Boulding, an economist critical of classical theory, of its logic of infinite growth in a finite world, which advocated a steady state economy, still resist this observation after 60 years, and still raise virulent shields? What mechanisms make this idea unacceptable? How are they evolving? Are there initiatives and possible solutions to make it understandable? What theories can be used to build a post-growth circular society? Any theoretical, empirical, or methodological contribution to this understanding of the link between the circular economy and post-growth will be welcome. Interdisciplinary openness will be particularly appreciated to grasp several facets of this issue.
