Communications on open thematic sessions > #3 The Dynamics of Non-Change as Theoretical and Practical Insights into Barriers to Socio-Environmental TransitionsContacts for Submissions Pascale Château Terrisse : pascale.chateauterrisse@toulouse-inp.fr
Abstract
Lock-in, path dependency, resistance to change, inertia, irreversibility, but also routine, habit, mannerisms, even tradition and conservation - the concepts used in the study of the dynamics of non-change are manifold and reflect a wide diversity of ways of understanding these phenomena within the social sciences. The concept of ‘lock-in’ has nevertheless emerged as a central framework for analysing non-change, particularly in the fields of socio-technical regimes and public policy.
This session invites contributions on the processes of non-change, whether the approaches are theoretical, empirical or conceptual. Its framework is based on the contents of a forthcoming work by the Odycée team of Inrae's UMR AGIR, entitled ‘Stuck’. Three main issues of this session are identified. The first is to contribute to understanding conflicts in socio-environmental transitions. Secondly, the aim is to challenge certain preconceived ideas - including in the scientific community - that change is necessarily desirable and positive. Finally, the aim is to show a diversity of theoretical approaches and analytical positions on these dynamics, and to discuss their complementarities and incompatibilities.
Key words: lock-in, path dependency, resistance, inertia, routines
